Special Sessions

Special sessions are very small and specialized events to be held during the conference as a set of oral and poster presentations that are highly specialized in some particular theme or consisting of the works of some particular international project. The goal of special sessions (minimum 4 papers; maximum 9) is to provide a focused discussion on innovative topics. All accepted papers will be published in a special section of the conference proceedings book, under an ISBN reference, and on digital support. All papers presented at the conference venue will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. SCITEPRESS is a member of CrossRef and every paper is given a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). The proceedings are submitted for indexation by DBLP, Web of Science / Conference Proceedings Citation Index, EI, Microsoft Academic, SCOPUS, Semantic Scholar and Google Scholar.

Scope

Early and accurate diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases is key to increase patient survival chances. An efficient screening is key to locate the precursor lesions. Videocolonoscopy and wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) are the gold standard tools for colon and intestinal tract screening, respectively. These tools still present some drawbacks such as lesion miss-rate, lack of in-vivo diagnosis capabilities or perforation risk. CAD systems can play a key role to assist clinicians in the different stages of the exploration. The objective of Gastrointestinal Image ANAlysis (GIANA) Workshop is to gather researchers working in this topic and to discuss with them the most recent state-of-the-art approaches, including those clinical aspects that are needed to efficiently deploy these systems in the exploration room.

The main topics of the workshop are the following: • lesion detection and localization (colonoscopy videos and wireless capsule endoscopy images) • lesion classification (colonoscopy images, wireless capsule endoscopy images) • anatomical structures segmentation (polyps, blood vessels, inflammatory structures, luminal region) • image classification (image quality, presence of bleeding) • instrument detection, localization and segmentation • quality assessment • application of new imaging modalities (NBI, FICE, iSCAN)
